The simplest modification seems to be carrying an 18-24" bar along to pry the clutch in and out of position. Functional, but cumbersome and tacky. I've seen levers fashioned that extend vertically to perform the same function as the factory system. Again, it depends on what you want...To me, it's best to keep the system original and this requires keeping the clutch and shaft clean and well lubricated, and avoiding mishaps with the cable. The older I get, the more I have to "think twice and cut once". I re-check things more often than I used to have to. :)
The picture is of a Ramsey 10,000 pto winch. It has a nice enclosure around the clutch, and the vertical handle is easy to use. But if things get gummed up and rusty from lack of use, any lever system will be difficult to use. And if the cable gets out of control, anything it wraps around will be mangled or broken.
