Slap a new set of rings in there and run it....

I haven't been following your postings, but the valve guides or the oil scavenger rings on the pistons come to mind as the issue.

If you put new rings in, are they installed the right way? If you didn't do new rings, then this would be my choice to attack while the head is off, you could look at the valve guides. When you bring the engine down to idle, you are taking the positive pressure in the cylinders and changing it to a negative and drawing from the crankcase past the cylinders or the valve guides.

What oil are you running? 30 weight non-detergent would be a good choice. Don't expect to run 5W20 in a 60 year old engine and have it not smoke.

If the engine sounds good and has good oil pressure when warm at idle, you may just need to install a set of rings and give the cylinders a quick hone to break any glazing.

That is my thought. Don't be afraid to rebuild your own engine. If there is a good machine shop in town, they would likely be able to bore and hone the cylinders "if needed" and grind the crank, maybe even install new valve guides. Don't rush the re-assembly and follow a good manual. Use a torque wrench on the important stuff and be aware of inch pounds and foot pounds.
