After much heating and cooling and pondering and not being able to figure out how my heat riser could possibly work, I poked around on the Internet and found this picture. It looks exactly like mine (old-style stamped "weight" rather than the heavy round one), with the exception that on mine the spring is looped around the opposite direction and hooks over the top of the post, whereas in this photo it hooks under the bottom of the post. Could it be that somebody put a replacement spring on backwards and that's my problem? Is the photo correct? I have kroil all over it and will try to take it apart tomorrow and turn it around.
