Most folks say to just use three gaskets and call it good. Any less and you risk gear bind which will lead to galling and ruin the PTO and transmission. A bit loose won't hurt anything as long as it is not excessive.

There is a proper procedure in one of the M37 manuals. It involves locking up the mainshaft, then measuring gear backlash with a dial indicator through the passenger side PTO cover. General consensus is that it's not worth the bother and the three gaskets work fine. If you want this procedure, email me your snail mail address and I'll mail you printouts of it.
