I had a very exciting weekend! Went to the folks’ house and worked on my ’41 WC-12 a bit. Started sanding on the hood and uncovered U.S.A. very faintly on the passenger side. However, could only make out what looked like a “W” where the registration number would be…Darn! The drivers side of the hood is in much worse shape than the passengers side, but I figured what the heck. Sure enough, the numbers started appearing, but it looked like two separate sized sets of numbers. Sanded some more and found the entire number: W-225018 in BLUE! Painted over the top of this in much larger stencil type letters is the same number in WHITE.
My theory: Painted OD at the factory with Reg# in blue, pre-war. WW2 begins, original blue numbers painted over with OD and new, larger white numbers are applied. War ends, truck is turned over to city Municipality- layer of yellow paint covers entire truck. Finally, truck is sold at auction, civilian buys it, and paints it in its current scheme of turquoise and white. Does this sound plausible?
Of course, there is a question in here. Can I trace the history of my truck somehow, now that I have the registration number? Can I at least find out which unit it went to? If anyone can help me, it would be you guys. I checked the WW2 Dodge Motor Pool site and found which range of production trucks mine falls under, but can I get deeper than that? Sorry for being long-winded, but I am so D@#% excited!!
Thanks a bunch for listening,
Dean A. Randell
