Here's a trick Ford fans used to do with the Ford sixes that had the log style intake maniold cast integral to the head.
A pad was milled on top of each end of the manifold, then a 1-bbl carb diameter hold milled and bolt holes (I forget how many, 2 or 4) drilled and tapped. There used to be a kit available to mount an adaptor base there that took a 1-bbl Holley or Carter or whatever carb. A linkage kit was also available that could be set to progressive (street) or strip (hot cam). A lot of older Ford vans had this conversion, since a hotter cam, milling the head and two etra carbs was a lot cheaper and easier than modifying the van (or the little cabover pickup version) for a V-8. This was also a trick done by some pickup owners, and kids who were handed down mom or dad's old Falcon.
