Transfer case fill level???

I thought when you filled the transfer case with gear oil you stoped when it reached the top of the fill hole?? I checked my level in my WC56 and when i pulled the plug gear oil rushed out for awile till it reached the fill plug level. What gives??? It was clean gear oil no water involved!!! Thanks
