the memories come flooding back now. The Norton had a finned giant exterior-threaded nut that held the exhaust pipe into the head. The engine vibrated so bad, this nut would back out causing the exhaust pipe to separate from the head. Their fix - the new models came out with a metal ring with a tang that was bent into the fins to prevent the nut from backing all the way off. The result - the nut vibrated as loose as the tang would permit, then vibrated until all of the threads were destroyed in the head. Norton refused to cover this under warrenty. I finally got ahold of the president for American Sales and after a heated discussion, the heads were repaired. I sold the bike shortly afterwards.
