As a child I clearly recall the time my father stopped at a station to fill up and bought us all a coke(very rare). This was during one of those many, econo-weekend-poorfolk-sightseeing-mini oneday vacation country drives many of us experienced as children.
The windsheild in the 53'buick was bug smeared so what does he do? He pours coke on the windshield and turns on the wipers. Well as we kids watched in disbelief my mother yells, what the hell are you doing ,now the windshields going to be sticky aswell as dirty! He just gives her that country grin and keeps pouring a little coke now and then until half a coke later it is as clean as a whistle.Of course he rinsed it with water when done so we finished our ride with a good clear view and we all kept trying to share our coke with dad.
The cokes back then seemed to burn going down more than today so they must have used more phosphoric acid back then as I 've tried it as an adult on my bugsmeared windshield without the same great effect.
