One of my late friends had been taken prisoner a week after Pearl Harbor and was imprisoned for over 3 and 1/2 years in Japan. He told me the Japanese guards had received a "kill order" from their leaders which meant that the minute the invasion forces landed on the Japanese main islands, all allied prisoners would be immediately killed. This was one other form of psychological torture for them as the guards repeatedly told the prisoners of this order.
He said it was the atom bombs which saved him and his comrades lives.
We owe so much to our WW2 veterans.
