The synthetic will actually leak more if the engine leaks oil as the molecules are more uniform and small. If you have an engine that burns a lot of oil (beater) then I'd re-use the oil. I would not put used oil in a Hemi or a 440 or something of value.
Garage where I worked as a kid, we put all our used oil in a 55 gallon drum. Every so often the chainsaw guys would stop buy and take 5 or 10 gallons for chain oil...
