just a general rule of thumb. Epoxy does not cure by creating heat, polyester does use heat. So yes the heat will help it cure in some ways but a bit of time helps too.

Mud - mix small amounts, cutting down on the activator will not hurt- but still, it does need some. Too much activator and the filler is brittle and you will find the outside layer will be sticky.
Once done you can seal those areas with epoxy, and if you find more then repeat the process. Epoxy is not a sanding primer. The sanding primer goes on top of the epoxy and body work.
