My Dad could sharpen a drill bit freehand better than any machine I ever encountered. He had a bench grinder that was off limits to us boys, he had a selection of stones that would sharpen any kind of bit I have ever seen. He also had a slow speed honing wheel that lay horizontal like a phonograph and it was used for chisels and planer knives and such. I still file my axes and hone them the way he showed me. His axe sharpening jig is still in use, it was made in Devon in the 1890's it had belonged to his Grandfather.
