I think the drill-doctor is the lowest-end sharpener that's easy to use. With practice, you can do an okay job by eye on the larger bits the side of a bench grinder wheel. I have a "knife grinder" (as in planer knives) from Grizzly (not sold any more) that I ended up using much more for drill bits than for planer knives. It holds the bits in a real jacobs chuck rather than a cheesy plastic guide, it allows water cooling if you want, and it provide the appropriate relief angle behind the cutting edge. Even so, it's tough to do a decent job of sharpening anything much smaller than a quarter inch. I use it all the time on the big bits, though, and it's great to not even have to attempt to use a dull bit.
