It was first taken to bare then I put around 4-5 layers of Herculiner letting it vapor out till dry each coat. Then I used enamel paint with a clear coat to protect it from the sun drying it out. I used just Herculiner on my Chevys Tailgate at the same time it is faded/dry looking now and glad my bumper does not look like that! The directions say it is paintable. Real hard to scratch but easy to touch up. This surface is tough it will take your hide off if you slip and hit it. I did not use it on the Gear Box or other end bearing support but put a special texture under the paint meant for fenders called Rock Guard by NAPA. Let the paint absorb a hit better with out chipping. If you use spray on bed liner it can come off easy if not prepped right. There is a lot of tarry stuff they sell you don't want to use it does not dry right. It has to be free of all oil and dirt to stick good. Dry time is very important too it is not a hard coasting till all the vapors are out that takes different times depending on how thick and re/coat time.
