I've used RACOR filter housings. They make it easy to buy 10 micron or 2 micron filters to fit inside the same housing.

The 4bt doesn't really need 2 micron filtration, that is becoming standard on high pressure common rail engines. but if you go with a finer pre-filter that is easy to service, you can reduce the times you change the stock filter. The biggest advantage would be the ability to use a water-blocking filter media, and since you're putting it upstream of the lift pump, it will be even more effective because the pump is not emulsifying any free water that is might suck up. The down side would be that a big, free-standing filter won't get as much heat for the engine in cold weather.

I have used pre-filters on boats and back when I was burning kitchen grease. Generally, I don't use anything other than the stock filter on my 4 and 6bt.

Most retail fuels are filtered to 30 microns at the point of sale. NCWM is discussing a change to 10 microns for retail sales.
