Yes, I had run it on the engine stand, didn't see any issues, and even the few drives were OK. Not sure it's not an issue with the sealing surface that slowly tore it up, might just get the sleeve anyway like you say.
I also tend to think it's the high oil pressure when cold. I'm around 50-60 psi cold with synthetic oil in it.
