That's pretty funny. I always get a kick out of how the east coast writers describe the wild west. Sandpoint is a good-sized city on a wide, flat plain with mountains far in the distance. The highway is wide, straight, and smooth (with plenty of modern guard rails). But to hear this guy tell it, it's a collection of tiny huts "huddled" in the bottom of a deep gorge that is barely accessible by a marginally-passable goat trail. That's okay. One of those east coast writers came to Wallace and described me in his story as "burly". He was a wimpy little fellow, so I suppose anyone capable of lifting something heavier than a pencil was a veritable Paul Bunyan to him.

And of course this NYT guy totally missed the reason Sandpoint is surviving -- rich Californians and other retirees. When you have downtown storefronts that are mostly restaurants and real estate offices, it's pretty clear what the economy is based on.
