We don't really have hardwoods in North Idaho. Maybe a little birch and aspen, but red fir and tamarack are considered best. "Buckskin" tamarack is prime. Once in a while I find some rock maple big enough diameter to be worth cutting, but that's rare. When I was on the coast, madrone was far and away the best. The stuff burns like coal. The only catch is the trees are very crooked and if you don't split it while it's green, you don't have a chance.
