When I installed my solar panels, I chose "American made" panels from a wide variety of options, and I paid a slight premium for that. When they arrived, they also said "assembled in China" on them. So, I investigated.

There is a standardized way of determining what is "American" and what is not. I was told that if more than 50% of the value of the product comes from or is added in the USA, then the they can call it "American-made", and each merchandiser can claim the exact percentage beyond that-as in Ford claiming that the F150 is the most American-made vehicle, because it has the fewest imported parts.

My panels are the "most American made", which tells me is that I probably got the cheapest panel manufactured in Asia that comes with the most marketing and markup added stateside.

My takeaway is to focus purchasing decisions on quality and customer service. Where it is made is irrelevant, when very few things are actually made here.

I am very happy with my solar system. Now, at least my electricity is locally produced.
