I used to watch my tach in my Water tender shifting in the beginning. I shifted at 500 RPM difference and used to count 2 secs before putting it in gear. Any faster it would grind with out the clutch being used. Then I just did it by ear and feel. I have a tack on the 6x6 for my test runs.
