Check timing, too far either way will cause problems, too far advanced will also cause it to kick back against the starter when it fires. I have an industrial engine with the same problem, but only way I have to change timing is to change the points gap - as the gap gets wider the timing advances, so a bit of a pain in the butt to work on.
