When I took the starter off my old truck I thought the bendix was bed because the bendix was not disengauged. So I got a new bendix installed it and same thing then I found out that the spinning of the engine disengauged it. As the link explains below.

The 1968 that I recently got the starter gear was chewed up but the ring gwer looked good. So I just replaced the starter with one I had.What year and size engine is your truck
