The things are modular. Two sizes, several housings, reverse or standard rotation. You can mix and match. I did that once- a $40 box, a $5 box, a $28 kit. Or find a local rebuilder to do that for you.
They are a mechanical puzzle for sure, but there are step-by-steps available. My latest Motors manual was good.
