Bad ground or loose power line may be the cause. A symptom might also be bad battery. 12V just sitting there means little. What's the voltage when you try to crank the starter?

Also is the battery the right capacity for your vehicle? I recently found out that the economy battery for our power feature minivan we bought two years ago was about half the capacity of the factory original equipment. Within the same battery group there are differing amounts of stored energy. Unfortunately that meant considerably more money for a battery. Fortunately the wife and kids are no longer getting stranded with a battery that can't start the engine.
