You are smart to find the problem before buying stuff.

I think everyone suggesting a bad connection is right.

I suggest you do your voltage check again, but in two places. Under a big load, check voltage directly on the output post of the alternator, and at the battery. You will likely find that the alternator never stops the 14.7 output, but under a load, that 14.7 never gets to the battery. Something like a corroded fusible link or corroded connection on starter bat terminal could be the culprit.

Also check for a good ground. Use the bat plus terminal as a reference, then take voltage readings at the alternator ground stud and the ground stud that the bat neg cable attaches to (engine block, etc) do this test under the load when your voltage is declining.

Take an old car headlight that draws a lot of current and make it into a test light with wires and alligator clips. This is a much better wat to test for voltage than using a volt meter because it will find a bad connection when a meter won't.
