Blown diodes = lower output voltage. When testing the voltage as described you are reading the battery voltage and the alternator output voltage and the interaction of the two.
I prefer to use a clamp on DC ammeter to test the current output of the alternator. Most clamp on meters read ac only but some read both.
You might try starting the vehicle and then disconnect the battery to see what the alternator output voltage is doing.
Best thing is to have the alternator and the battery load tested separately.
Even that is not always conclusive. I once had an alternator that checked good on two different test machines but would not put out voltage on the truck. I finally just put on a new alternator and it has been working for 7-8 years now.
