At least in stainless steel, it's like it was greased. I'll have to try it on steel. I believe it may be the active ingredient in commercial cutting fluids.

I'll have to try it as a penetrant too.

Isopropyl in NOT the same as ethanol or methanol. But Vodka or methanol might be worth a try too. Meantime the rubbing alcohol will be kept in the shop instead of the medicine cabinet.
