I took my wheels to a tire shop to have the tires removed. They ended up bending/breaking some of the rings and would not remount the tires going back on. The rims were not that clean either. I also had a set of wheels and new tires from Ed Bateman that were much better. Unfortunately someone had slit the tires so they we not useable. I decided to do the job myself after reading the archives. No amount of beating allowed me to get the old hardened tires or the newer slit ones off. I bought a Harbor Freight split ring tire tool to remove the ring. With the air out of the tires, I was not worried about any danger. A "saws-all" and time did the trick. Had to cold chisel the last inch of bead.I had the wheels and rings powder coated. The rings were around 1/2 inch off where the 2 ends met as opposed to 2-3 inches on my tire shop removed ones. After powder coating, the new tire and rings fit right on. I inflated them from a safe distance but once the tire starts to air up and the bead goes over the a good fitting ring, the ring will have a hell of a time coming off. glad i did it. May not be labor cost effective but I got some exercise and the satisfaction of doing it myself.
