Shortening the frame sounds like the easy part. Altering the frame length is done routinely on cab and chassis, medium and heavy duty trucks.

You'll have more fun building the Carryall into whatever you want it to be if you are not also trying to make it a cheaper alternative to a new truck. In my experience, kids grow up faster than I can build a retro ride to haul them. You might need that new crew cab while you're building your Carryall. The cost of that new pickup will also pale in comparison to what it costs to build your dream Carryall.

I won't tell your wife. In fact, I'll join you in self-deception if you want. I should burn the piles of receipts from building my trucks. The evidence shows my plans to save money did not work. I wouldn't trade the experience, however. Building and fixing old stuff has been worth every penny.
