That tool came from an era where carpenters had to know a lot more than they do today. In the early days of framing we used a framing square for everything. Stairs, braces, all the different kinds of rafters, etc. You could even cut studs in progressive length on a sloped wall. Now there are books and calculators to tell you everything. Truss companies can build a set of trusses that anyone could put together to make the roof.
