I doubt M is for "miter", since all the cuts are "miters". You probably noticed they're symmetrical, going outward from the center in both directions. It might be that you need the manual to know what they mean. A common use for a miter box would be to cut rafter angles. Does the guide tilt in two dimensions to do compound miters? Are they marked as well? I wonder if they correspond to the tables of angles stamped on rafter squares, or maybe to the tables on a rafter square made by the same company that made the miter box. Might be a line of thinking you could start with, at least. I can't find my really old steel rafter square off-hand, or I'd look and see if there are letters as part of the tables. I know it's covered with rafter tables.
