I had the exact same surgery in November of 2008. I was driving after only 4 weeks. But, the nerve damage was bad enough after having lived with the hernia for about 3 weeks, that I have never regained complete feeling in part of my hand and fingers. I still have to be very careful of the position I lay in to sleep. This causes me to wake up completely as I roll over during the night - conscious that I don't twist wrong and put a strain on my neck due to the limited flexibility that comes with having vertebra fused. I know the next day if I laid wrong during the night.
