If he wants to protect the high-current lead (50+ amps), low voltage circuit breakers are hard to find and high-voltage ones are way too big. Normally, on a vehicle, there's no need for high-current breakers or fuses because the alternator lead can carry as much current as the alternator can put it, and the starter lead can carry as much current as the battery can put out. You start needing battery fuses when you have more powerful battery banks with more complicated wiring and the battery cables could overheat in case of a short. Even there, the manufacturers universally use fuses rather than breakers because faults are unlikely and breakers that can handle hundreds of amps are large and expensive.
