Keith has it right, it all boils down to RPM's.
RPM's in the final analysis produces speed all things being equal. Gas engines will typically
produce twice the RPM's of a diesel. There's your speed. Diesel's are way more expensive to build, repair and run in about all categories.
But they do intrigue a lot of people.
