why a slant six?

Recently I've been looking at some old sweptlines - d300 d400...and a w200 crew cab.
all of them have slant 6s in them.
Why did dodge use these engines in such large trucks...they seem to be more prevalent in the larger trucks and more v8s in the half and 3/4 tons. Seems strange to me...
