A clean and tinned soldering iron tip will make the job easy. As already mentioned, 60/40 rosin core solder(we used Kester) and a decent iron will do lots of electronic/electrical component work. To clean up the flux, we used isopropyl alcohol and a tooth brush. Get the iron hot, so that the solder will flow when touched to the tip. Don't hold the tip on the components for more than necessary to transfer the solder. Excessive heat will damage the component and the circuit board. I learned the hard way and became an expert at repairs caused by overheating the circuit board foil...
All this said, we used temperature controlled soldering stations (Weller brand) and had desoldering vacuum equipment for component removal. And yes, the solder was lead alloy.
