Hum, seems there is a diff. in names for wasps and bees from north to south. Down south the small ,(yellow with blk strips)bee looking wasps that build their nest in the ground are called yellowjackets and usually very agressive. The larger but small above ground, nest building wasps(yellow with thicker brown strips) are know as geunie wasps, not as agressive as the ground burrowing yellowjackets but more so than the larger red wasp. We have only two type bees here I believe the honey and bumble bee,not including the tiny metallic green looking sweat bee that can tag you pretty good. I'm glad both the giant imported hornets(american looking-european type and the japanese-redish-yellow w/strips) build their nest in dead trees or fence post. While not agressive unless their nest is disturbed, they are a fearsome looking thing almost 2" in lenght and looks like a giant wasp or hornet. I once saw one sting and fly away with a large locust.
Any time an older vehicle has setup for awhile, it has surely become the home of wasps.Never stick your face in tight places in such a vehicle least one fly up your nose and sting you or in the eye. 2 summers ago, I fired up an old 78'chevy PU that had set for about 9mo. I turned on the air only to have wasps from a large nest inside the vent, fill the cab. I couldn't seem to get out fast enough even though I didn't get stung. A bug bomb did the trick, die suckers!
