The NFPA did away with all new construction of open cab trucks years ago. Russ is right it was for spotting your truck and to assist with size-up. Better visual assesment. The NFPA now requires all new trucks to be totally enclosed, no open jump seats.

Truth be known it was much like anything else in the fire service...tradition. Why else would we be back to wearing leather helmets?

Now if they would just let me have my hip boots back.
