Don't hot tank your gas tank. The caustic in the hot tank will eat up every bit of galvanizing (zink) from your tank and it will rust very quickly. The ChemTool and gravel or nuts and bolts trick that Lonnie referred to is probably the best way to go. I wouldn't use acid, either, unless it was formic (found in most paint strippers) or sulfamic. These are organic acids and don't attack the iron quite so badly, but will still eat metal.
