Sounds like the needle bearing on the nose of the mainshaft. Perhaps by now the cage on the needles has departed. Drain the lube and send a magnet into the case to loook for filings etc. If you have frag, pull the trans. You'll probably find that the mainshaft tip has lost it's carburized case and is all garfed up. Check the bore of the input shaft for similar damage. VPW has NOS mainshafts. I had to get one for my 420 a few years back. Mine was messed up, but the needles and input gear were ok. Let us know whacha find.
