Don't know if your '59 is like my 65 D200, but I've had headlight troubles on that rig after it sits a while because the headlights are grounded to the sheetmetal piece that surrounds them and that in turn is grounded to the body through three rusty sheetmetal screws that rarely make good contact. Actually the way it's set up it's more like the sheetmetal headlight trim makes contact to the body by being more or less pushed up against it by the not-very-connected screws. Maybe try poking, banging, and wiggling in that area and/or running a separate ground wire from the headlight to the frame. Of course it could be lots of other things too.
