MU-2 winch feed bottom or top?

I'm rebuilding a MU-2-R with cats head that came on my '53 B4 (with no cable), and I want to get the winch brake assembled correctly the first time. Looking at the diagrams in the parts book and service manual, I should have the spring end of the brake band on top, pointing toward the passenger side. But this seems to indicate a top wind setup. I thought these were bottom wind winches. The -R indicates a right hand winch, and it has a MU-100-R worm gear in it, and the gears have the same lead as in the illustrations, as well as being what is listed in my parts book. Am I screwed up here? Can somebody clarify this for me? Thanks much, Rob
