I got good at dropping the tranny in my '49, after having to do it several times within a few months. I now have the engine out, so having had experience with both tasks, I can safely say that it's easier to drop the tranny.

In fact, in order to get the engine out, you pretty much have to drop the transmission anyway. This is because the flywheel has to be removed from the engine, since the bellhousing "wraps" around the front of the flywheel. But to get the flywheel out, the tranny has to be dropped so that the flywheel will clear the tranny's input shaft.

To get the tranny out, you pretty much have to remove the floor pans, so that all the shift levers and other sticks will clear. It helps to have the flooring removed anyway, so you or a helper can get access from above when lowering the tranny.

I usually end up removing the cluster of sticks that control the transfer case and parking brake. These are on the side of the tranny housing.

Use some kind of rolling jack and try to get a helper. I always do.

There's a lot more sheet metal to remove when taking out the engine, too.

Good luck!

Matt
