I had the exact same problem with my '55 Oldsmobile. Except instead of shoving out the clutch, it bound up the automatic shift linage, so you couldn't get it out of gear as it screamed wide open throttle. It's a good thing they didn't have locking steering columns in '55, because the only thing to do was shut the key off.

The difference between our cars and the early Dodges is that we were breaking the outboard mounts that are supposed to resist engine torque. The center mount does not have as much torque on it.

My Olds was configured like the Dodge with one mount in front and one on each side of the flywheel. I couldn't afford the $70 for a new rubber mount, so I chained it down as you describe.
