That's sickening. They seem to be trying every desperate trick they can think of to somehow "manage" the wildlife so we can have both lots of elk and lots of wolves in North Idaho, and it just ain't gonna happen. When Lewis, Clark, & Co. hiked over these mountains, they damn near starved to death in both directions. That's the "natural" state of affairs -- lots of predators chasing very little prey. I don't envy the F&G people for having to try to please everyone, though.

Last fall, a week before hunting season, I drove the Fly Hill road from the upper St Joe to the upper Clearwater, and noticed A) nobody had set up a camp anywhere along the way B), the old camps were getting grown in and the firewood piles were rotting, and C) there were no elk and no elk tracks. I hiked down into the little meadow below Fly Hill where the old maps show a cabin, and found a couple of elk tracks, more elk bones than I've ever seen in one place before, and lots of wolf scat full of hair and bones. It was old, like it could have been from the previous winter. No doubt the elk had gathered in that meadow, as they tend to do, and as the snow got deep the wolves closed in on them and took their their time eating them as needed. Now the FS is closing even more roads up there to provide more "elk habitat". The thing is, the wolves don't obey the "road closed" signs.
