Honestly I don't think a diesel conversion in any form is going to be cheap. Even common diesels are far more expensive then their gas counterparts.
I'll admit a V8 is probably the smart conversion. You do a diesel because you want a diesel, but never because it's cheaper, even if you get the motor for peanuts the stuff needed to make it work will destroy any savings and the maintenance and fuel cost will probably easily eat any fuel economy benefit you might get.
