Of course I always drive a stick, so generally compression braking suffices on long hills, except for at the corners. With an automatic, it might be a bigger issue. Never had any fading issues with drum brakes, though, even on steep, winding roads with a heavy load. I'm not saying they're better, but just that I don't think they're automatically worse.
