Well, now you get to take it back apart.
Intermediate gear/bearings are checked with the unit out of the case. Same with the sub-assemblies. Shim stack is determined by preload on bearings - add/take out, reduce shim thickness to get correct preload. You also have to remove oil seals when checking pre-load. You'll be an expert when done the second time.
