Hard wood is good firewood. My son cut up a big maple tree that his neighbor took down last summer. It's great firewood.
I bet you do have some good hardwood in Oz. It's interesting how many trees and shrubs have been transplanted from there to the US, mostly the warmer parts.
My friend and I used to take a Ford N600 we had with an 8'x14' flatbed on it up into the mountains and fill it will firewood, cut and split, in less than a day. Western Larch or, as locals call it, Buckskin Tamarack. It's dead, standing, and excellent wood. But it's getting too scarce to go looking for it. Now I buy it from the young guys. The trees used to be 3' to 4' in diameter, now they are all around 18" to 24". I guess that's from forest fire prevention.
